UV DTF vs Crystal Labels: What's the Difference?
Sticker suppliers use both terms loosely, so the two get confused. A crystal label is a thick resin dome built on a printed label. A UV DTF transfer is a thin printed film applied directly to the product. Both can look premium. Only one suits your surface, your volume and your handling.

What a crystal label actually is
A crystal label, also called a dome sticker, gel sticker or epoxy sticker, starts as a printed label on vinyl or polyester. A thick layer of clear polyurethane resin is applied over the print, then cured until it forms a raised dome.
The dome is the product. It magnifies the artwork underneath, protects it from scratching, and gives the pack a tactile surface that customers notice immediately.
- Dome height typically around 1mm to 3mm, clearly felt under the thumb
- High gloss, comparable to glass
- Resists scratches, moisture and UV exposure
- Best for badges, emblems, laptop and tumbler decals, packaging seals, outdoor signage
What UV DTF actually is
UV DTF means UV direct to film. A printer lays UV-cured ink onto a PET film, a UV lamp cures it instantly, and the printed film is laminated with adhesive. The operator peels the transfer and applies it to the product with pressure.
There is no separate label body, so the graphic sits close to the surface and follows curves and textures better than a stiff dome can.
- Thin, usually well under half a millimetre
- Full CMYK plus white, so gradients and photographic artwork reproduce faithfully
- Applies to curved, textured and hard to label surfaces
- Best for bottle and jar labels, packaging, gifts, short runs
How the two compare
The practical differences come down to thickness, print capability, durability and minimum order. Compare the two on the factors that affect your production line:
- Thickness: crystal is thick and raised, UV DTF is thin and nearly flush
- Print: crystal is usually screen or digital with a limited palette, UV DTF handles full colour and photographic detail
- Shape: both cut to shape, crystal keeps a smooth dome edge, UV DTF holds fine detail
- Water resistance: both handle water, crystal tolerates more abrasion
- Heat: crystal generally tolerates higher surface temperatures
- Minimum order: crystal typically starts higher, UV DTF can start from one piece
- Lead time: crystal runs longer because of the doming step, UV DTF is faster
- Price: crystal costs more per piece, UV DTF less
When crystal labels are the better choice
Pick the dome when the sticker is part of the product experience, not just a label on it. The extra thickness is the point.
- You want maximum perceived value on a hero product or gift item
- The item is handled constantly, such as bottles, laptops and tumblers
- You need long outdoor life on badges or emblems
- The artwork is simple: a logo, a wordmark, an icon
- Examples: car club badges, laptop decals, luxury candle seals, collectible badges
When UV DTF is the better choice
Choose the transfer when the artwork is complex or the surface is difficult. Detailed illustration and small type survive better on film than under a dome.
- You need gradients, photographs or fine type
- You are labelling bottles, jars, boxes or pouches in volume
- You want a fast turnaround for a launch
- You want to test a design before committing to a large run
- Examples: candle labels with safety text, skincare labels, food packaging, gift box seals, Etsy packing
The hybrid option
We also print UV DTF artwork and then dome it. You keep the full colour detail of digital print and gain the raised crystal surface, cut to any shape.
Candle makers, coffee roasters and chocolate brands tend to choose this when the label carries both detailed information and the premium feel that justifies the price.
Which one costs more
As a rough guide for 100 pieces at 2 by 2 inches, expect these ranges. Foil and special shapes move the numbers, so treat this as a starting point rather than a quote.
- Standard vinyl sticker: 15 to 25 USD
- UV DTF sticker: 25 to 40 USD
- Crystal dome label: 40 to 70 USD
- Crystal UV DTF hybrid: 45 to 80 USD
Common mistakes
Most of these come from choosing the sticker before looking at the container.
- Putting a thick dome on a tight curve, where it bubbles or lifts. Use UV DTF instead
- Using UV DTF for outdoor signage that must last years. Choose the dome
- Forgetting the dome is raised, so shipping cartons need extra protection against crushing
- Ordering a large run before testing on the real product
UV DTF and crystal label questions we get most
Can crystal labels be removed? They use permanent adhesive and are not designed for removal. If you need a removable label, use a vinyl or UV DTF option instead.
Can UV DTF go in a dishwasher? The print is waterproof and alcohol resistant, though hand washing extends the life of any applied graphic.
Which one suits a candle brand? Detailed scent and safety text usually points to UV DTF, while hero scents often justify the crystal hybrid. Send us the artwork and we will say which fits.
What to remember
- Crystal is a thick resin dome, UV DTF is a thin printed film
- Domes suit badges and heavy handling, transfers suit detail and curves
- Both handle water, the dome takes more abrasion
- Test on your real container before a large run
